High Availability

Businesses today are faced with the critical need to ensure the availability and continuous operation of their business systems in spite of potential failures ranging from disk crashes and CPU failures to catastrophic losses of their computing facilities or communications networks, as well as planned downtime for maintenance. Many companies also need to access and share information stored at geographically dispersed data centers – particularly when a data center has an outage.

Replication Server addresses high availability of data in three areas:

  1. Manage planned downtime (routine maintenance downtime, software upgrades, etc.)
  2. Protect during unplanned downtime (machine or network outages)
  3. Provide disaster recovery – return to operations as quickly as possible

Replication Server provides continuous duplication of critical OLTP and application information to off-site backup facilities without the high latency inherent in tape backup strategies. Once established, this environment can be automated to ensure that information is replicated according to business requirements and the switch to backup systems accomplished with no impact to users or to business.

Additional Sybase solutions for high availability:

Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) HA Option – provides near continuous database access by leveraging cluster architecture – creating ASE “companion” databases. Client connections and database operations can instantly move from one server to the other without interrupting end-users.

Replication Server – simplifies data movement and synchronization across the enterprise. It allows DBAs to quickly setup redundant disaster recovery software and rapid failover sites and to ensure the transactional integrity of all replicated information.

Mirror Activator – ensures zero data loss, dramatically lowers time to recovery and activates secondary site systems. It works in conjunction with block replication systems including EMC SRDF, IBM PPRC, Hitachi TrueCopy, Veritas Volume Replicator and Network Appliance SnapMirror.

Open Switch – seamlessly routes end-users from the primary system to a back-up system when an outage is detected. During planned downtime, a simple flip of a software switch transfers client connections to backup servers.
