PowerDesigner v16.1 is now generally available. With this release, we continue with our commitment of providing frequent, quality, value-add releases to our customers.
PowerDesigner 16.1 offers:
- New branch management - developed from the ground up to provide better enterprise scalability and usability. This will completely change the way version control is used for modeling!
- Local Browser Filtering - helps users focus on what they need to work on, and nothing they don't
- Additional Glossary capabilities: enhancing the “True Data Dictionary” with better sharing with all stakeholders. Improvements to the reporting and governance support via the “check model” feature.
- Centralized resource files – the repository centralizes resource file control to guarantee consistent use of configurations and customizations throughout the enterprise.
- Enterprise-class security policy enforcement in repository logins to guarantee the safety of your mission critical metadata.
- Better web-based metadata authoring with the Portal Composer to increase the ability to collaborate with non-modelers
As we always stress, you should give the latest release of PowerDesigner a “test drive” and see for yourself how it can bring value to your team!
One of my all-time favorite data books is the 1978 classic, Data and Reality, by William Kent. There is a 3rd edition of this book coming out on 1 March 2012, and I had the honor of not only publishing this book, but also adding commentary throughout the book including writing the Preface. "It would be difficult to build a true Enterprise Architecture without PowerDesigner. Having a well-developed architecture will allow us to better understand how changes to business processes and organizational changes impact the company and who will be affected."
- Tim Graham, Enterprise Architecture Modeler, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield
Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has a well-established enterprise architecture governance program as well as a data governance program that combine to define the standard technology building blocks that help the company improve business processes. To help manage, document and understand the impact of application changes on business processes and systems, Wellmark is developing a methodology based on the Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture to add to its enterprise architecture (EA) program. The methodology includes a defined set of architectural models.

"In our opinion, every major user of an Oracle or SAP application should be a Saphir customer, and SAP and Oracle should seriously consider partnering with Silwood Technology to offer Saphir to their customer base."
- Philip Howard, Bloor Research
Saphir from Silwood Technology, provides ‘ERP metadata intelligence’ to organizations that have implemented one or more of SAP, SAP BW, Oracle eBusiness Suite, Siebel, PeopleSoft Enterprise, PeopleSoft EnterpriseOne (formerly JD Edwards) and which need to understand those applications in the context of data-oriented projects. Saphir provides a deep understanding of ERP environments, including SAP R/3, SAP BW and all of Oracle’s major ERP and CRM packages. It extracts relevant metadata into its own repository and then lets you sort, filter and manipulate that information for various purposes that we will describe in due course.

PowerDesigner and TOGAF Framework
The TOGAF methodology gives you a 360° view. It leads you through looking at your organization from different perspectives, taking the time to consider your business strategies, applications, data and technology, as well as how they intersect. TOGAF also supplies a process and taxonomy that help everyone on the enterprise architecture team to work in the same way, according to the same guidelines, which helps ensure the highest-quality end product.
PowerDesigner is a great fit for TOGAF practitioners for two primary reasons. First, it allows you to define and describe any deliverable or document set that’s part of TOGAF, including sets for business or technology, models for information architecture, and multi-step processes. PowerDesigner gives you the right metamodel for the right use at the right time.
Second, PowerDesigner’s unique Link & Sync technology can track dependencies between deliverables: between data and processes, applications and technology. Capture the links between all the different aspects of your organization, and you’ll ensure that you accurately represent those dependencies — and maintain them through multiple generations of your enterprise architecture.
