KXEN

Prior to our Continuous Intelligence offering, if you wanted to do ‘Next Best Activity’ you had to choose between conventional predictive analytics or complex event processing. KXEN and Sybase have changed the Next Best Activity ‘game’ by combining both approaches, enabling you to analyze continuously aggregated event streams and to effectively manage the “big data” necessary for getting to the real-time insights organizations want and need in order to make the best decisions and take the best next actions.

Bruno Delahaye
Senior Vice President of Business Development, KXEN

In today’s fiercely competitive and risky business and social/political environments, front-line employees must make decisions and take actions based on enormous volumes of traditional and live-streaming data. KXEN, in collaboration with Sybase, developed Continuous Intelligence, a solution that redefines real-time and enables continuous, comprehensive situational awareness, providing users with streaming insight that allows them to detect meaningful patterns 10 to 1000 times faster than conventional business intelligence systems.

Business Advantage

By combining conventional predictive analytics and complex event processing, users can gain truly real-time (sub-second) insights that are necessary to make the best decisions and take the best next actions.

KXEN Continuous Intelligence Enables Truly Real-Time Decision-Making

KXEN, the leading provider of predictive analytics for business users, is revolutionizing the way companies use predictive analytics to make better decisions, enabling them to analyze enormous volumes of structured and unstructured data – a.k.a. “big data” – in real-time.

Continuous Intelligence, a solution developed by KXEN, in collaboration with Sybase, an SAP Company, is designed to enable organizations to essentially redefine “real-time business intelligence.” Continuous intelligence, as the name implies, enables continuous, comprehensive situational awareness, providing users with streaming insight. This enables them to detect meaningful patterns, reduce the latency between events and decisions to milliseconds and outperform conventional business intelligence systems by 10 to 1000 times.

Continuous Intelligence is an important innovation when you consider that the amount of data available to individuals and organizations to inform their actions at any given moment defies characterization in any meaningful way. To call data volumes huge, vast, extraordinary, enormous or immense is only to point out the limitations of language.

When you combine the amount of transactional, historical and demographic/customer information in any organization’s data stores with relevant external data available from third party data aggregators and from live data streams, including situational awareness and security systems, social networks, news feeds and so on, the growth in available, decision-relevant information is continuous and daunting.

Attempts to exploit such nearly immeasurable volumes of data in real-time using traditional data mining and business intelligence solutions are futile. Whether the need is to ensure security for airline passengers, detect credit card fraud, spot public health threats, or more positively, identify opportunities, on the fly, to cross- or up-sell current customers based on patterns of activity, the technology requirement has moved beyond the limits of traditional business intelligence to the realm of predictive analytics, which in turn, relies on the ability to achieve continuous, real-time insight to provide the basis for decisions and actions.

Solves Real Business Problems in Split-Second Timeframes
Continuous Intelligence employs applications and technologies from KXEN and Sybase.

Specifically, Continuous Intelligence combines the KXEN InfiniteInsight™ predictive analytics solution suite including InfiniteInsight™ Modeler, Explorer and Factory; with the Sybase IQ column-based, highly optimized analytics server and Sybase Event Stream Processor (Sybase’s Complex Event Processing platform), to make predictive analytics usable, accessible and productive in real operational environments to solve real business problems in split-second timeframes.

Before the development of the Continuous Intelligence solution, organizations engaged in predictive analytics in relatively real-time (minutes or hours). However, in these instances, the predictive analytics that were being performed were based on data stored in existing, internal databases – often staged, aggregated databases – that did not incorporate complex, streaming, event-based data. So, while this earlier iteration of predictive analytics was certainly an advance over basic event triggers, it did not take into account the comprehensive environment in which relevant business events were unfolding. Also, quite commonly, decisions based on earlier implementations of predictive analytics were automated, “rules-based” decisions rather than truly and fully informed intelligent, in the moment decisions.

“Prior to our Continuous Intelligence offering,” explains Bruno Delahaye, Senior Vice President of Business Development at KXEN, “if you wanted to do ‘Next Best Activity’ you had to choose between conventional predictive analytics or complex event processing. KXEN and Sybase have changed the Next Best Activity ‘game’ by combining both approaches, enabling you to analyze continuously aggregated event streams and to effectively manage the “big data” necessary for getting to the real-time insights organizations want and need in order to make the best decisions and take the best next actions.”

In other words, continuous Intelligence is about tapping into all available, relevant information and reducing data processing and analytic latency to solve real business problems when it makes the most difference – NOW!

A Case in Point
The following scenario provides an example of the kind of benefits Continuous Intelligence can provide organizations across multiple industries -- namely enabling individuals at the point of action to rapidly access and analyze large volumes of stored and streaming data in the moment in order to make the best decisions and take the most appropriate next steps.

Consider the situations security staff at airports face every day. As international flights arrive, passengers must go through security checkpoints to be cleared for entry. The agents at these checkpoints have typically relied on checking passenger passports and verifying that information against data contained in various databases about passenger identities and previous travel. They have used that information as the basis for asking passengers various questions about the reasons for their travel, their itineraries and so forth. Continuous Intelligence enhances agents’ capabilities by also providing access to real-time, event-based information that in combination with the physical and historical database information at hand can shed additional light on each individual and the threat he or she may pose.

Examples of real-time, event-based information might include the ability to cross check the passenger at the checkpoint against the list of other passengers on the plane to see if there is a suspicious connection. Or Continuous Intelligence could provide very current information on other recent travel history or other recent activities that might suggest a reason to question a particular passenger more extensively. By employing all available data – historic, recent and real-time – security screening systems such as these can be significantly more effective.

Sparks Interest in Multiple Industries
Organizations in other industries including financial services (trading and credit-card fraud detection), healthcare (public health monitoring) and telecommunications (fraud and security) are also interested in and excited about the availability of Continuous Intelligence, as they, too, are in the positions of having to make business-critical or public health critical decisions in the moment based on floods of ceaseless data that must be captured and analyzed in split seconds. As it turns out, in business as in life, there is only now.

Opens New Possibilities for Agile Real-Time Next-Best Activity
Continuous Intelligence was launched following a successful pilot in what may well be the most demanding and time-sensitive environment: trading. The trading market was selected for its rigorous requirements regarding transaction volume and the need for real-time decision-making. The pilot proved that the combination of CEP and predictive analytics could provide traders with near-instant insight on market movements.

More specifically, accuracy and reliability exceeded 45% and 95% respectively. From the real-time data feed, the solution aggregated data (5 seconds windows aggregation proved to be the most predictive) and deployed predictive models within a 30 milliseconds timeframe (while continuously taking into account streaming positions taken by other traders).
