Managing Data Growth Through Intelligent Partitioning: Focus on Better Database Manageability and Operational Efficiency with Sybase ASE
IDC OPINION
The demand for managing more and more data in enterprise information technology (IT) organizations has exploded in recent years. This data explosion is fueled by the growth and scope of Internet-based applications that reach a global audience on a 24 x 7 basis, government policies requiring additional retention of data, and adoption of more demanding applications that require faster and more scalable databases.
IDC's ongoing research shows that growth in the volume and complexity of managed data results in an exponential increase in data management costs, as increasing amounts of valuable staff time are spent on maintenance and performance tuning rather than higher-value tasks. Database management systems (DBMSs) such as Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) have a vital role to play in managing and curtailing the costs and consequences of data growth by providing:
- Operational efficiencies through reduced maintenance windows
- A scalable, reliable technology for enabling sustained database growth as needed without intervention
- Improved self-management within the DBMS to free the staff from low-value, uncreative work
- Smart partitioning that allows data to be logically segregated for more effective transaction and query processing
