Zero Recovery Time for Mission Critical Systems
Israel Discount Bank developed a mission-critical, Sybase-based system for its foreign and Israeli currency trading room. The database is Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE),which, according to bank officials, has exhibited zero recovery time after failures since it was first adopted by the bank several years ago. Given this success and the trading room personnel's experience with Sybase technology, the bank decided to broaden its usage such as for its foreign currency rate and interest server. Today, Israel Discount Bank is taking advantage of ASE's built-in Java capabilities for each new trading room development. In addition, the bank is using Sybase's Replication Server Option for Oracle solution to carry out data replication from the ASE database to an Oracle database.

According to Klepper, Sybase provides the bank with both excellent performance and high availability. "We are dealing with a product that is very stable and hardly suffers from downtime. The fact that the Sybase database works with the raw device means it can offer extraordinary performance capabilities that are quite relevant to the nature of our work. The bank's trading room currently carries out a large number of daily transactions that are well supported
by Sybase."

Klepper says that because Sybase proved itself in the bank's front-office trading room, the bank is working on additional developments within the same environment. He notes that Ness, SRL and Reuters helped the bank assimilate the Sybase solution. According to the bank, the tool is very easy to operate on a regular basis, and offers diverse and convenient Sybase-quality support products for systems developers and users.
