ZDNet Asia Increases Site Usage and Business Ties with SMS Service
ZDNet Asia is a full-service Web destination for technology buffs. Typical visitors to the ZDNet Asia site are looking to buy, use, and learn more about technology. ZDNet wanted to dramatically increase traffic to—and usage of—their site, so ZDNet Asia teamed with Sybase 365 to launch a Web-based, free SMS service for users to send SMS to friends or colleagues via the ZDNet Website. Sybase 365 was selected to operate this service on behalf of ZDNet, based on the strength of Sybase 365's ability to offer network connections across various Asian countries via a single interface, backed up with strong technical support.

To ensure continued success, ZDNet Asia needed to up the ante for their popular Web site, to drive traffic and increase usage. Since online has traditionally been a "pull" vehicle (i.e., users seek out and download, or "pull down," information to their computers), a large level of marketing and promoting of brand awareness was necessary to bring about an increase in audience. This often required extensive media spending and a long-term investment for the upkeep of this effort.

To achieve this cost-effectively, ZDNet Asia sought a regional "push" media to increase the page views across the Asia Pacific region. Sybase 365 deployed a push solution whereby ZDNet Asia was able to offer mobile, value-added services for end-users, and in the process capture a "profiled" mobile database, which proved to very attractive to marketing and advertising business partners.

The first two months following the launch of the service saw an overwhelming response, with SMS activity skyrocketing to 150,000 messages over that period, which significantly increased the traffic and usage of the site. Originally launched only in Singapore, the response prompted ZDNet to extend the service to Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia.
