Monitoring Performance from Anywhere
With more than 40 percent of all mobile calls made through its systems, Ericsson employs more than 100,000 people in 140 countries and is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. The company required a new approach by which senior business and financial managers anywhere could instantly view and examine financial and business performance, by country, business and product segment.

Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise and Sybase EAServer serve as core technologies for a system developed by Aaro Systems AB, Ericsson's Sweden-based, long-standing systems development partner. The system uses Sybase EAServer for the transaction server to Intranet-based Java client PCs and Sybase ASE for the database.

A Solid Platform for Rapid Application Scalability
"The Sybase technology was chosen to provide the solution because it had proven so successful for Ericsson's application development in the past," said Jonas Aaro, developer, Aaro Systems AB. "Sybase's solution had already proved to be stable, reliable and secure, giving a solid platform for rapid application scalability."

The Sybase solution delivered a firmer grip on the way Ericsson runs its business, a surer touch by managers on individual issues, more confident and effective action to resolve problems and a higher level strategic view.

Quick and Easy Access
Successfully piloted in just three weeks, the full Sybase system was developed in under three months. Users have smooth and secure communication of management information throughout Ericsson's international operations, with easy access to key performance indicators in an easy-to-assimilate graphical environment. New information can be compared quickly with previous reports, and variances easily displayed, stored locally and printed.

A manager can log onto the system through a browser and instantly view, retrieve and save information in an easy-to-understand and graphical format.

"I can see how the group is doing overall, how individual market areas and business units are performing and look at specific financial information, like balance sheets for particular business area," said Richard Smedberg, Ericsson's financial controller. "The scorecard approach means that I can make rapid comparisons with previous reviews of the data— and the graphical module means that I can view that information swiftly and easily."
