DeBeers Venetia Diamond Mine

"After reading the technical documentation for the Sybase offering, we had little doubt that it would be able to provide the functionality we needed. The solution went live late last year after 10 months of development and has since experienced no downtime."

DeBeers Venetia Diamond Mine, the largest diamond mining company in the world, needed a solution that would give end-users a single interface to perform real-time and historical queries against a number of disparate systems.

Mining for a Gem of a Solution
DeBeers Venetia Diamond Mine produces over 40 percent of the world's gem diamonds from its own mines in South Africa and in partnership with governments in Botswana, Namibia and Tanzania.

The mining operation needed a solution that would allow end-users to perform real-time and historical queries against a number of systems running on disparate platforms, through a single interface.

Sybase Selected for Functionality
De Beers scoured the market for products that could meet its requirements and selected Sybase as its vendor of choice.  "After reading the technical documentation for the Sybase offering, we had little doubt that it would be able to provide the functionality we needed," said Keith Delladonne, manager for DeBeers. "However, what we needed to put to the test was whether the solution would be able to handle the sheer volumes of data we wanted to push through it."

The solution is based on the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) database and EnterpriseConnect Data Access (ECDA) middleware. The system operates as a virtual database that allows applications to transparently access data that resides in multiple sources by creating a proxy database and tables.

Sybase ASE provided a high-performance, distributed query engine for data analysis and also included a set of internal APIs that Sybase, via ECDA, provided client applications with a single view of the data.

Increased Functionality, Reduced Downtime and a Unified View
With the Sybase data management solution, DeBeers not only increased its functionality, it also reduced downtime and integrated disparate data sources for a unified data view. The solution went live after 10 months of development and has since experienced no downtime.

"In effect, we now have 15 or 16 systems, including financials, HR, technical and maintenance, tied together through a single interface," Delladonne said. "The functionality is complex: users can run queries against practically any combination of these systems."
