5. Warehouse Control Center
Warehouse Control Center (WCC) is a set of meta data management tools that include Meta Data Manager, WCC Web Client, and the WCC Application Programming Interface (API). WCC 4.1 incorporates all changes previously distributed with Warehouse Control Center 4.0.2 EBF-1.
5.1 New features and enhancements
This section identifies new features and enhancements in Meta Data Manager.
5.1.1 General performance issues
-
Help files have been repackaged for easier use.
-
Packaging has been adjusted to work with multiple JVMs.
-
PD9 Import now retrieves all Table and View References.
-
Power Designer Import now loads comments rather than notes.
5.1.2 Connection profiles
Meta Data Manager includes three kinds of connection profiles:
JDBC support for Oracle 8i and MS SQL Server databases
JDBC compatibility and support depends on the database manufacturer. JDBC drivers distributed with Oracle 8i are not compatible with JDK 1.3; MS SQL Server does not support JDBC. If you intend to use Oracle 8i, MS SQL Server 7, or MS SQL 2000 as your warehouse database, you must use ODBC connectivity.
5.1.3 PowerDesigner Import Utility
The PowerDesigner Import utility imports a physical data model from a PowerDesigner repository. You can use this utility to populate the logical and physical views; and capture logical descriptions, table links, and foreign-to-primary key relationships recorded in the logical model. WCC currently supports PowerDesigner 9.5.2 (Build 873) only.
Before you can use PowerDesigner Import, you must consolidate the model in the repository, and establish appropriate access rights to the repository from within PowerDesigner. See the PowerDesigner Repository User's Guide for additional information.
Note
Functionality to import a Warehouse Architect Model (WAM) directly into WCC has been deprecated. To import a .wam, open the file in PowerDesigner 9, then follow the steps for model consolidation.
5.2 Installing Warehouse Control Center
Warehouse Control Center is distributed on the Warehouse Studio Product CD

5.3 Known Problems
This section describes known problems related to Meta Data Manager.
5.3.1 JDBC support for Oracle 8i and MS SQL Server databases
JDBC compatibility and support depends on the database manufacturer. JDBC drivers distributed with Oracle 8i are not compatible with JDK 1.3; MS SQL Server does not support JDBC. If you intend to use Oracle 8i, MS SQL Server 7, or MS SQL 2000 as your warehouse database, you must use ODBC connectivity.
5.3.2 Deleting physical meta data
If you delete meta data from the table level or above, any table links associated with the deleted table(s) are flagged as invalid, but are not deleted. This results in errors on the validation reports that cannot be manually corrected by the user.
Work Around
Delete meta data only in the Working Directory.
Any invalid meta data will not be promoted to the Production Directory. If meta data is outdated, clear the directory and import new meta data. It is not recommended that you change production meta data directly.
Meta Data Manager Super Users
This procedure is especially important to remember during the validation process.
5.3.3 PowerDesinger Import Utility Validation Errors
If you experience validation errors when you import an IWS model with the PowerDesigner Import utility in WCC, check the foreign key constraint name in the DBMS resource file in PowerDesigner tool. You must change the default constraint names in the PowerDesigner resource files before you build the database. For more information, see Creating the schema for the sample database section in the Installation and Configuration Guide that came with your model.
5.4 Documentation
All Warehouse Control Center documentation is delivered in PDF format. You need Adobe® Acrobat® Reader version 4 or higher to view these documents. Acrobat Reader is available for free from the Adobe web site.
An option on the Warehouse Control Center submenu in the Sybase group gives you direct access to Warehouse Control Center User's Guide. Detailed installation and setup instructions are in the Warehouse Control Center Installation and Configuration Guide on the Warehouse Studio Getting Started CD.
The table below summarizes the documentation summarized with this release.
5.5 Updates and clarifications
The following features are not listed in the documentation.
5.5.1 General documentation issues
-
All documentation is labeled version 4.0.2.
-
Any file used for import into the Meta Data Manager should reside in a directory that has read/write privileges. This allows the Meta Data Manager to write out trace information.
-
Validation reports reflect values for ALL meta data contained in the directory, not just the meta data for the most recently validated database. It is therefore recommended that meta data for all databases be validated at the same time.
-
Sybase recommends that you do not delete entire warehouses or host systems from the Business or Physical Views. If meta data for an entire warehouse has become outdated, clear the directory and import new meta data. In addition, major changes to meta data should be made in the Working Directory, and then promoted to the Production Directory. It is not recommended that you change Production Directory meta data directly.
-
When deleting meta data, keep in mind that dependencies, such as table links, will not be deleted. These items will be flagged as invalid, and you must manually either delete them or update them to remain in synch with your meta data.
-
When specifying a trace file location during an import, include the full path and the trace file name. You may need to create the trace file if it does not already exist.
-
In the Business View, a logical element may appear under a different entity than the one it was created under originally. This occurs when you create a new element within the Business View and then open the Physical View and associate the new element with an existing physical column. When you return to the Business View, the element appears under the logical entity that is associated with the table to which the physical column belongs.
5.5.2 Exporting InfoCubes
In Cognos Export, the file name to be entered by the user should be a location and a name (e.g. C:\Temp\WCC_COGNOS_EXPORT). This is the Cognos catalog file that will be created by the WCC Cognos Export process. Do not enter a file extension after the file name. Currently the WCC documentation states that a .csv file needs to be entered by the user in the wizard.
If multiple information cubes are to be exported to Microstrategy, Cognos, or BusinessObjects, WCC needs to be shut down and re-opened before each export is performed.
5.5.3 WCC Web Client
If you currently have the WCC Web Client installed and are upgrading to a more recent version, you must clear your Java Plug-in cache. You can do this by going to Settings → Control Panel → Java Plug-In → Cache → Clear Cache.
5.5.4 WCC Web Client Security Certificate
The WCC Web Client requires a security certificate. Sybase provides a security certificate with pre-coded start and end validation dates. A security certificate must exist in the expected location, with the expected name, for every user. If more than one user logs into the same machine, or if you use more than one login, each login requires its own security certificate.
If you use both Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers, or if there are multiple Web Servers hosting WCC web sites, you must create a certificate for each combination of browser, Web Server, and login.
WCC Web Client was certified with Java Plug-in versions 1.3.1_01, 1.3.1_01a, 1.3.1, and 1.3.1_02.
If you have a different version installed on your client machine, uninstall it and install 1.3.1_02 manually. To find what version of the plug-in you have installed go to:
Click Start → Settings → Control Panel → Java Plug-in.
You can find the Java Plug-in v1.3.1_2 at http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.3.1_02/jre/index.html
When you download, choose the Internationalized version of Java 2 Runtime Environment. When you install, choose Netscape and IE if you think you will use both.
When you open WCC online help from the Web Client, a message box may prompt you to decide whether you want to install and run a signed applet from Sun Microsystems. If you install the applet, a second message box may appear and notifies you that an "...applet would like to print. Is this OK?" Click "Yes" to display the Java Help Browser.
6. Adaptive Server Anywhere 7.02
Adaptive Server Anywhere 7.02 is a full service, small footprint relational database management system, which includes all necessary drivers for ODBC applications. Adaptive Server Anywhere 7.02 is a component of SQL Anywhere Studio and is distributed on the Warehouse Studio Product CD.

6.3 Updates and clarifications
The following new features are not listed in the documentation.
6.3.1 dblang command-line utility
This utility reports and changes the registry settings that control the languages used by ASA and Sybase Central.
Usage:
dblang [switches] [language-code]
Switches
| -q |
Quiet mode (suppresses message box displaying output) |
| -d |
Deployment settings only (Sybase Central settings not affected) |

Running dblang without a language code reports the language registry settings for Adaptive Server Anywhere and Sybase Central. It reports only those registry settings that are present, which typically are the local machine settings. The values are two-letter language codes as listed above.
In addition, dblang reports the registry setting for the C++ version of Sybase Central, for those users who have this from previous releases. The setting is a number.
If you specify dblang with a language code, it reports the current settings, and then modifies those settings to the new language. Output includes both the original and new settings. The current registry settings are reported in the current language, and the new registry settings are reported in the new language.
If you specify -d, only the Adaptive Server Anywhere setting is modified.
6.3.2 Microsoft SQL Server 2000 supported by MobiLink
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 consolidated databases are now officially supported by the MobiLink synchronization server. Both SQL Server 7 and SQL Server 2000 use the same syncmss.sql script to set up the consolidated database.
6.3.3 Accessing licensing information and functionality
The functionality of the license management tool dblic.exe is now accessible through the dbtools interface. The dbtools.dll entry point is called DBLicense and has the following prototype:
short DBLicense(const a_dblic_info)
For more information, see the dbtools.h header file.
In addition, the following license provides the license information for the current database server:
Notes
-
NumProcessorsMax is normally 2 for dbeng7.exe and 0 (i.e., unlimited) for dbsrv7.exe.
-
LicenseType is "concurrent seat" or "networked seat (per-seat)"
-
The values are displayed by executing the following statement: call sa_eng_properties() or by calling the property function directly, as in: select property ( LicenseType)
6.3.4 Limit resolution of timestamp values
Adaptive Server Anywhere timestamp values can contain times with a resolution in microseconds. This resolution can cause problems when replicating (using SQL Remote or MobiLink) to non-ASA databases such as Oracle, DB2 or ASE, all of which store timestamp values with less precision.
To deal with these problems, a new option has been added to limit the resolution Adaptive Server Anywhere uses for timestamp values. When the Truncate_timestamp_values option is set to ON (default value is OFF), timestamp values are truncated based on the setting of the Default_timestamp_increment option. For example, setting
Default_timestamp_increment to 100000
The Truncate_timestamp_values option can only be set for PUBLIC, and should not be enabled for databases already containing timestamp data.
6.4 Known Problems
Note the following change in behavior - the Adaptive Server Anywhere OLE DB provider now defaults the recordset cursorType to ForwardOnly. Previously, the default cursorType was Dynamic.
7. PowerDesigner
PowerDesigner is a warehouse and data mart design tool, with the capability to generate DDL for many target databases. PowerDesigner includes a full range of reporting features on warehouse objects, including multidimensional objects.
Note
You need to enter a Product Key or serial number to install PowerDesigner. This confidential key is included on a paper document enclosed in the package. Be sure to keep this and all other Product Keys and CDs in a safe place.
7.1 New features and enhancements
This section identifies new features and enhancements in PowerDesigner. See the PowerDesigner New Features Guide for additional information about all of the new features in this release.
7.1.1 EAS support
PowerDesigner is delivered with an extended model definition that provides support for EAS 4.1.3 and above. EAS 4.1.2 is no longer supported.
7.1.2 Language report
Some new report items are not translated in the German report language. All report titles have been modified to adopt a more generic formula in the English report language. The English report language delivered in 9.5.1 and earlier will be delivered under the name 'English (deprecated)." If you want to revert to previous title naming, select the "English (deprecated)" language in the report property sheet. This report language will not be delivered in the next PowerDesigner version.
7.1.3 Symbol behavior change
Priority is given to the symbols on top: when symbols overlap, it is no longer possible to select and resize the symbol in the background. Although the grabber handles are visible, when you click to perform the resize, focus immediately goes to the object in the front.
7.1.4 Start and Ends
Starts and ends can now have graphical synonyms in the Activity diagram and the Business process model.
7.1.5 Decisions
Decisions can now have several input links and several output links in the Activity diagram and the Business process model.
7.1.6 Auto-adjust to text
If Auto-adjust to text is selected, the symbol size is recalculated based on the symbol content. If Auto-adjust to text is deselected, the symbol size is never recalculated. In PowerDesigner 9.5.2, when you manually resize a symbol, the check box auto-adjust to text is deselected and symbol size will not be modified in case of object renaming or content modification. If you wish to re-adjust the symbol to text, you have to use the auto-adjust to text function (Ctrl-J). The auto-adjust to text check box will then be reselected.
7.1.7 Package symbols
Package symbols can be transparent. This can be useful when you want to use InBox UML representation. You have to deselect the Fill Color check box in the Fill page of the Format dialog box.
7.1.8 PDM preview
PDM models now have a Preview page that displays what will be generated for the entire model during database generation.
7.1.9 User and Group Passwords
User and Group Password box is not encrypted anymore.
7.1.10 Sybase ASA, ASIQ triggers and procedures
In previous versions of PowerDesigner, triggers and procedures generation scripts used to be generated with a '/' at the end. This is no longer the case. PowerDesigner generates a ';' at the end of procedures and triggers which is closer to common usage and easier to execute for standard interpreters. The scripts generated by previous versions of PowerDesigner will not be reversed properly unless you change the command terminator definition in the XDB file from ';' to '/' or define the "/" terminator in the option tab (Command zone) of the reverse engineering window.
7.1.11 IWS models and PowerDesigner 9
Sybase now distributes all IWS models as PowerDesigner models (.pdm), which replace the WarehouseArchitect models distributed with previous versions of IWS. As discussed elsewhere in this release bulletin, you must use PowerDesigner 9.5.2 (Build 873) with Industry Warehouse Studio 4.1.
7.1.12 PowerDesigner Repository
The PowerDesigner Repository feature replaces MetaWorks as a change management tool for model development in a team environment. You can use the PowerDesigner Repository to perform the following tasks:
-
Extract the data model, consolidate changes, and provide version control, so that you can easily use the IWS model in a team development environment
-
Generate DDL for the sample data warehouse based on the data supplied with your IWS application or application template
-
Generate DDL for your target data warehouse
-
Export meta data to Warehouse Control Center so that you can generate information cubes for business intelligence tools
All of these procedures have changed from previous versions. See the IWS System Integrator's Guide for details.
The PowerDesigner Repository
7.1.13 Object replication
Makes synchronized copies of an object. Attribute changes on an original object are automatically propagated to the copied object, and allow you to reuse the definition of an original object in the same or different models or packages.
7.1.14 Profile
Allows you to define user defined methods, models with predefined meanings or specific generation targets.
7.1.15 Free model
Allows a user to create charts and diagrams in a context-free environment.
7.1.16 Enhanced VB scripting
Allow you to automate repetitive tasks on a series of objects or models in an automated way. Other applications using VB scripting or other languages that support COM. can communicate with PowerDesigner.
7.1.17 Symbol improvements
Improved symbols and editing capabilities improve the look and readability of your diagrams.
7.1.18 Extended attributes in lists
Allow you to display extended attributes and modify their value in object lists. To do so, you have to open the Customize Columns and Filter dialog box and select the extended attributes to appear in the list.
7.2 Installing PowerDesigner 9.52
Warehouse Studio requires PowerDesigner 9.5.2, and this package includes installation CDs for PowerDesigner Studio 9.5.1 and PowerDesigner 9.5.2.
To ensure that your installation is most current available, install the version of PowerDesigner 9.5.1 distributed with this release, then install the PowerDesigner 9.5.2 Web Upgrade.
7.2.1 Installation issues
PowerDesigner 9.5.2 is a minor release and must be installed in the same directory as PowerDesigner 9.0. or 9.5.0. PowerDesigner 9.0, 9.5.x and 9.5.2 all share the same registry and named path information. You cannot install this upgrade over version 8 or earlier.
-
Installation provides an install for Microsoft Data Access Component (MDAC) that may prompt to reboot your computer to be completed. If you have launched PowerDesigner installation from a network drive, this drive must be reconnected automatically at logon for the MDAC install to complete properly.
Some problems may occur with MDAC installation on a computer having VirusScan version 4.5 from McAfee running. In that case, deactivate the anti-virus to allow MDAC installation.
-
Under Windows 2000, if you are using an NTFS drive, the user that will install PowerDesigner must have write access to the Windows temporary directory (\WinNt\temp).
This user can belong either to the Administrator group or to the PowerUser group.
-
Under Windows NT 4.0, 2000, and XP, non Administrator users may receive a warning message during installation. Setup requires write access on certain directory and on the registry that a non Administrator users may not have. Setup can go on despite that warning message.
-

7.4 Known Problems
This section summarizes known problems with this release of PowerDesigner.
7.4.1 Error when consolidating models to the repository
If you have made a change to the IWS model and you want to consolidate the change as an update to the prior version in the PowerDesigner repository, you may receive the following error:
“Unexpected error while executing the following action: Changing value of attribute Create Date of object Shortcut of Column <Column Name> The consolidation of the document has been canceled.”
Workaround
There is currently no workaround for this error, except to consolidate the model as a new document to the repository, rather than as an update. PowerDesigner Engineering is tracking this problem as CR 317794.
