University Relations ? FAQ

Who is eligible for intern/co-op opportunities at Sybase?
Students who are currently enrolled in an accredited academic program are eligible. If you have graduated and are no longer pursuing a degree, you are not eligible; however, you should check out our full-time opportunities for new graduates. Sybase is an equal opportunity employer and hires students according to local laws.

What does Sybase look for in potential student employees?
We look at coursework, grades, previous experience, and relevant soft skills. For technical positions, we also consider school projects and technical background. For non-technical positions, a general understanding of office technology is suggested. Strong interpersonal and team skills are important in all positions.

What is the difference between an intern and co-op student?
At Sybase we often use the terms interchangeably and they perform the same types of work, but there are differences. A co-op student is someone who’s enrolled in a cooperative education program at an accredited college or university. Most interns work full time at Sybase during summers between academic sessions and in some international locations may complete full time internships for a continuous 12-16 month period. Sybase also offers part-time internships during the school year for students attending schools located near Sybase facilities.

Does Sybase hire high school students as Interns?
Yes, Sybase does have a program for high school students and works with schools adjacent to Sybase locations.

Does Sybase hire international students?
Yes. Sybase hires students in all offices worldwide who have the appropriate legal status to accept employment in the host country.

What is the dress code for student employees?
While wearing jeans is acceptable for a majority of our locations, business casual is typical and the expectation is that everyone will come to work dressed for success.

What location(s) hire student interns and co-ops?
Student interns/co-ops work at Sybase sites around the world. Sybase’s goal is to establish a strong presence at targeted campuses around the word, and we are committed to continuing to build these relationships to continue to attract the brightest and most talented students to participate in our University Relations program.

What hours are students expected to work?
Work hours for students in the U.S. and Canada are subject to negotiation with the hiring manager and vary up to 40 hours per week. Other regions have specific information related to hours of work, statutory holidays and overtime standards, which will be discussed during the interview process.

How do I apply?
Applications for student employment are accepted through our website and/or campus career centers. To view a list of available student positions and apply, please visit our careers website.
